Healing Is Not a Straight Line: The Journey Towards Wholeness
Healing is not about “getting over it.” It’s about integrating the past into a more compassionate, embodied, and meaningful present. And while it can involve understanding patterns, processing trauma, or learning new skills, healing also touches something deeper.
Healing is about reconnecting with yourself.
This journey isn’t always linear. It spirals. It doubles back. Sometimes it pauses. And along the way, it asks us to reconnect not just with our minds and bodies, but often, with something beyond ourselves.
What Does Healing Really Mean?
Healing isn't the absence of pain. It's the presence of awareness, acceptance, and alignment. It's the ability to sit with your experience, not as something to fix or escape, but something to understand, and eventually, to grow from.
In therapy, healing might look like:
Speaking the truth you've long held in silence
Grieving a loss that others never validated
Feeling joy again, without guilt or fear
Rebuilding trust with others, and with yourself
And for many, healing includes a spiritual dimension: a reawakening of connection, meaning, and belonging.
The Spiritual Side of Healing
While not everyone identifies with traditional religion or spiritual practice, many people sense that healing touches something sacred.
For some, this shows up as:
A desire to feel connected to something larger, whether that’s nature, the universe, God, or a sense of inner wisdom
An exploration of purpose — Why did this happen? What can come from it? Who am I becoming through this?
A journey of forgiveness, not just toward others, but toward the self
A longing for wholeness, a return to feeling deeply human, fully alive, and fundamentally worthy
In this context, therapy can become more than a place to “work on issues.” It can be a space for soul-tending, a place to explore what gives your life meaning, and how to live more in alignment with your truth.
Spiritual healing doesn’t have to look a certain way. It might involve meditation, ritual, prayer, journaling, time in nature, or simply silence. Sometimes, it’s just a feeling, a quiet knowing that you are not broken, and never were.
Common Approaches to Healing in Therapy
Depending on your needs and preferences, therapy may include various approaches that support emotional, psychological, and spiritual healing:
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Helpful for managing distressing thoughts and learning more balanced, supportive ways of thinking. Think of it as mental decluttering, creating space for clarity and calm.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
A compassionate approach that invites all parts of you, even the ones you’ve judged, into healing. Many find this work deeply spiritual, as it reconnects them with the wise, centered “Self” within.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
Especially useful for trauma, EMDR helps the brain process painful memories and allows your nervous system to come out of survival mode. It’s like emotional rebalancing, giving your past a place to rest, so it doesn’t rule your present.
Somatic Therapy
Recognises the body as a key site of healing. By tuning in to physical sensations, movements, and breath, we access unspoken wisdom and begin to release what words alone can’t reach.
Mindfulness & Self-Compassion
Practices like meditation and breath-work help anchor us in the now, which is often where healing truly begins. Over time, these practices can feel like sacred rituals, offering a daily return to inner peace.
Healing Is Like...
Sometimes metaphors help us understand what words can’t explain. Here are a few I often share with clients:
Healing is like tending a garden. You can’t force it but with care, even what looked lifeless, can bloom again.
Healing is like spiritual excavation. You dig gently, layer by layer, not to destroy, but to uncover what’s been buried and forgotten.
Healing is like learning to dance again after a fall. At first, the steps feel shaky. But with time, rhythm returns.
Healing is like returning to a home you didn’t know you left. You walk through the door and something in you softens. You remember: I belong here.
You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
Whether you’re healing from trauma, navigating life transitions, or simply longing for more authenticity and peace, you don’t have to carry it all by yourself.
Therapy can be a deeply supportive space to explore not only what hurts, but also what’s meaningful. A space where all parts of you — your wounds, your wisdom, your questions — are welcome.
